‘No H1N1 cases reported in Jordan’

AMMAN - The Kingdom continues to be free of the new A series H1N1 influenza (swine flu), the Health Ministry said on Saturday, stressing that it will maintain procedures adopted to avert an outbreak in the country.

“Although no swine flu cases have been discovered in Jordan, we will continue following preventative measures to be prepared for any suspected case,” Minister of Health Nayef Fayez said in a statement sent to The Jordan Times yesterday.

The ministry earlier established a hotline (0799036023) to disseminate information about swine flu, in addition to designating 19 health institutions across the Kingdom to receive suspected cases.

Jordan will also participate in a meeting of World Health Organisation member countries taking place in Geneva today, where discussions will focus on measures to fight swine flu and develop a proper vaccine, according to Fayez.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said A (H1N1) is not a water-borne disease and is not transmitted through drinking water or soft drinks.

“Like all influenza viruses, it is transmitted through infected respiratory droplets from sneezing and coughing. To avoid infection, people are advised not to share drinking cups, glasses or mugs with others,” a WHO statement said.

It added that the A (H1N1) is not a food-borne disease and influenza viruses are not known to be transmissible to people through eating processed pork or other meat and food products.

“Heat treatment commonly used in cooking meat (e.g. 70°C/160°F core temperature) will readily inactivate any viruses potentially present in raw meat products,” the statement said.
