Jail,fitnes for those who break home quarantine
KUALA LUMPUR: Those on home quarantine have been warned that they face hefty fines or jail if they break the conditions imposed on them.
This warning from the Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai came after the authorities closed SJK (C) Jalan Davidson for a week and quarantined some 100 students of SM Section 9, Shah Alam and SRK Assunta (2) in Petaling Jaya.
At SJK (C) Jalan Davidson, all 2,100 students, teachers and school staff have been quarantined for a week until June 26.
Liow warned that those who broke quarantine faced a fine of up to RM10,000 and a maximum jail sentence of two years.
“This means everyone from this school must be at home and avoid contact with the public during the quarantine,” he said, adding that the students were also not allowed to attend tuition classes and social gatherings.”I advise them not to break the quarantine for the sake of the community. We hope we are not forced to charge anyone under the Infectious Disease Control Act.”
He added that while at home, the affected people were advised to limit contact with other family members who were not quarantined. “If those who are quarantined start to feel unwell, they must immediately call the Federal Territory Health Department (at any time) at 03-26983757 or 019-2299397.”
Liow also advised those on quarantine to observe personal hygiene, such as covering the mouth when coughing or sneezing and washing hands with soap and water.
“The National Security Council has been informed (of the closure) and I have spoken to Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also education minister.”
The Selangor Education Department has instructed 100 classmates of the students from the two schools to be home-quarantined.
Its director, Dr Zahri Aziz, said the parents of students affected would get instruction letters from the Health Department at the schools today. “They will be told not to allow their children to come to school for one week beginning yesterday (Sunday).”
He added that teachers from the two classes in both schools would also be quarantined.
“However, there has been no direction to close schools in the state.”
