Occupational Therapy Officer

Formed in Kuching in July 1968 by a group of mental health professionals and community leaders under the Societies Act 1966 aimed at promoting mental health services and enhancing community quality of life. The Miri branch was formed in 1999. It is a non profit charitable, voluntary organisation and work closely with the Miri hospital.
Occupational Therapy Officer –Mental Health Rehabilitation
(Sarawak – Miri)

Responsibilities:
Purpose of the Job position:

* To facilitate/lead programmes designed to rehabilitate/support the mentally ill
* To act as warden/facilitator for day-care or stay-in clients and help them in the recovery process

Accountabilities/Responsibilities:
It is envisaged that the job can grow with the incumbent starting with the simpler of the accountabilities listed below. Training/Sponsorship for training can be given to the right candidate.

* To prepare and facilitate programmes aimed at rehabilitating/supporting the mentally ills or carers/friends
* To facilitate day-care activities for clients referred by the Miri hospital
* To prepare clients and facilitate their re-integration into the mainstream of society e.g. jobs or schools
* To provide psycho-education to clients and their carers
* To maintain rules and regulations for the rehab centre at Rumah Kenyalang
* Any other accountabilities/responsibilities that maybe required of the job from time to time

Special Challenges:
Number of full time staff at the rehab centre maybe very limited and the incumbent may need to manage the rehab centre on weekends without being personally on-site..

Requirements:
Qualifications, Experience & Attributes:

* SPM with credits in Bahasa, English, Mathematics and at least 2 other subjects
* Degree/diploma in Occupational Therapy
* Experience not required although any experience looking after the mentally ill will be an advantage.
* The job will call for equal doses of (i) the passion to care and learn and (ii) the capacity to be trained to facilitate the best of psychosocial therapies for the mentally ill (in consultation with the Miri hospital) for clients
* Honesty, maturity, good communication/social skills and able to work very independently with the minimum of supervision
* Willing to move to Miri or work in Sarawak.
* Preferably male but females are encouraged to apply
