RN-Neurosciences, EMU, and Radiation Therapy Unit

The 36-bed Neurosciences and Radiation Therapy Unit at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia manages patients – adult patients and pediatric patients as young as one year – with malignant and/or congenitally related diseases, who require complex diagnostic work-up, major surgery, radiation therapy, and/or chemotherapy. Nurses in the unit function within a total care nursing system.

Common conditions treated include brain and spinal tumours, spinal surgeries, AV malformations, neurovascular anomalies, aneurysms, and spina bifida. Neurosurgeons perform complex neurosurgical interventions using state-of-the-art technology such as: neuronavigation, navigational microscope, intraoperative monitoring, cortical mapping, frameless and frame-based stereotaxy, and interventional neuroradiology. In 2006, almost 600 neurosurgical procedures were performed in the OR.
